I’m sure a lot of you have heard of the “Paleo” diet, short for paleolithic, also known as Primal. The idea behind it is that we get back to our paleolithic roots and eat the way our ancestors ate way back when, just very naturally. For some it’s just another fad diet, but for others it has become a great lifestyle so please be supportive of everyone and how they choose to be happy and healthy:)
There are a few basic rules to follow when adhering to the Paleo diet so for those of you interested I will give a short outline.
Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, (organic/grass-fed) meats of any kind, nuts and seeds.
Cut out dairy, legumes, sugar, grains, and pretty much processed food of any kind and you have yourself a paleo diet.
There you go. Simple as that.
People try to make it complicated by strictly following ”rules” and what is “allowed” and whats not, but I think the best way is to find what works for you. Ease into small changes and see how your body responds. If you stop having headaches because you cut out gluten, perhaps you shouldn’t go back to it. If you stop eating beans and you no longer have gas pains, perhaps beans are not your thing. Basically, don’t let the rules of a diet become something that you cannot sustain because that is when you are no longer striving for a lifestyle, but a fix.
I personally try and follow the paleo diet because I have seen and felt great results not just with lost weight but with strength gains as well as overall bodily health. I also just love the concept because it is not just a quick fix, it is a sustainable, healthy lifestyle choice. Also, because of the way America has destroyed our food, going completely unprocessed cleanses your body of all crap and supplies it with true nutrients your body can use.
Yes, it’s a change. Yes, it can be difficult. But like anything, if you set your mind to it, it will become a habit-which is what healthy eating should be. Not something you use once a year to get down to your “ideal” weight only to gain it all back, but something you can do forever to STAY healthy.
Most importantly, get outside and MOVE! Find something you love whether it be hiking, dancing, walking, lifting or swimming and make it part of your lifestyle.
